Oaths

Their Majesties have been asked what They’re saying when They respond to oaths in Old English.

Their response to the Knight’s Oath is:

"Đēs hīeraþ wit and on handa sellaþ,
swa þīn manndryhten, tō medemienne
ðīnne holdscipe mid handgriþe
ellendæda mid arunge
and aðbryċe mid breġes wrace."
"This we do hear and do promise,
as your liege-lord, to reward
your loyalty with the king’s protection,
valor with honor,
and oath-breaking with the king’s vengeance."

For others Their response is:

"Đes hieraþ wit and on handa sellaþ,
to medemienne
ðinne holdscipe mid handgriþe
manrædene mid mærnesse
and aðbryce mid breges dome."
"This we do hear and do promise,
to reward
your loyalty with the king’s protection,
your service with honor,
and oath-breaking with the king’s justice."
